High Alert in Delhi

U.S. and Indian security agencies and intelligence services are mounting an unprecedented operation to keep President Obama safe on foreign soil as he arrives here for a historic visit as "chief guest" of Republic Day. Security is always tight wherever the U.S. president goes, but it appears that measures have been taken to a new level for this trip. Driving it all is the fact that Obama will spend a several more than two hours outdoors Monday on an open-air viewing platform in the center of the city -- a situation Secret Service tries very hard to avoid. The situation is made more complicated because foreign military aircraft will be crisscrossing overhead, tens of thousands of residents are expected to be clogging surrounding streets -- and escape routes, and Pakistani militants have been threating terror.

22 days to go

New Zealand all-rounder and bowling destroyer Nathan Astle has a unique record in his career which is standing tall even today when it comes to world cup history but it is an unwanted one. The record has nothing to do with his batting onslaught, carving bowlers for sixes, or neither it has anything to do with his gentle medium-pace bowling. Interestingly, Astle tops the charts as the player who has registered the most number of ducks in world cups. Out of his 22 innings, Astle has failed to open his account on five occasions – a record which he jointly shares with Pakistan’s Ijaz Ahmed who achieved the feat in 26 innings. It’s an odd one for Astle considering that he holds the record for the fastest double century in Test cricket history – 222 off just 153 deliveries against England – at Christchurch in 2001-02. What is even more fascinating is the fact that both Astle and Ijaz are close to finding a third buddy sharing that record and it will be none other than the South African ...

PM : Narendra-Modi Wax Statue

Image
Singh posed with the statue, flanked by Modi. The BJP chief even tried to shake hands with the statue. Senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde  said over a million people were expected at the rally, being held at the BKC grounds and billed as a show of strength by BJP workers. Over 22 trains brought in BJP supporters from across Maharashtra, and the organisers made arrangements to distribute over five lakh food packets, many containing Gujarati snack "thepla". Around 10,000 tea vendors were among those specially invited for the rally. "Somebody from the Samajwadi Party  said Modi was a tea vendor and a tea vendor cannot become the Prime Minister. And Modiji had replied, 'Desh bechne walo se chai bechne wale achche hote hain' (those who sell tea are better than those who sell the country)," Maharashtra BJP unit president Devendra Fadnavis  said. "That created a sense of pride amongst the tea vendors of Mumbai and they contacted us an...

NTR Airport *** Exclusive

Image
Hyderabad: Shamshabad airport authorities are in a spot. The Centre’s order to name the ‘domestic terminal’ of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport after N.T. Rama Rao has left airport officials nonplussed. A senior official from GMR Ltd. which operates the airport, said: “We are a little confused on how to implement the orders. The airport is integrated and it has no separate terminals. Domestic and international arrivals are being handled in one terminal and departures in another.” “How do we keep separate name boards in the same terminals is the question,” he said. “We will discuss with civil aviation officials and go about it soon,” he said. The Begumpet airport in the heart of Hyderabad had separate terminals for domestic and international travel; the domestic terminal was named after NTR and the international terminal after Rajiv Gandhi. After Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in 1991, the P.V. Narasimha Rao government named the Begumpet airport after the slain leader. The...

ANU Assembly

The winter session of the Andhra Pradesh Legislature is likely to be held on Acharya Nagarjuna University premises in Guntur. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is said to be mulling the idea of holding the Assembly session in the new State as part of efforts to reassure that the State government was committed to keeping the administration closer to the people. Though a firm date of the session is yet to be announced, government sources said the legislature could convene its meeting around the first week of December. Legislative Assembly Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao along with Legislature Secretary and senior officials will visit the university premises on Monday and examine facilities. The Speaker will visit H.H. Deichmann Auditorium and take a look at the facilities. The auditorium complex with a capacity of 1,000 has two more seminar halls in addition to green rooms. Apart from facilities, the Speaker is likely to take stock of the security arrangements that should be put in pla...

Andhra Pradesh unveils road map for new capital city

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh will have a "riverfront" capital on the south side of river Krishna as the State Government ended months of suspense and speculation today by announcing that 17 villages in the existing Guntur district will be developed into a new capital city. The villages, however, will not be disturbed and the capital city will be built in six sectors of 5,000 acres each, according to members of the State Capital Advisory Committee. It's for the first time the TDP-led Government has come out with a clear location of the new capital as it has so far been saying it would come up in the Vijayawada region. The 17 villages, of course, are within a 30-km periphery of Vijayawada, though on the other side of river Krishna in neighbouring Guntur district. The villages that will form part of the new capital are: Neerukonda, Kuragallu and Nidamarru in Mangalagiri mandal; Borupalem, Tulluru, Nelapadu, Nekkallu, Sakamuru, Mandadam, Malkapuram, Velagapudi, Mudalingayapalem...

The New Android Phone Coming To Verizon Has A Super Sharp Camera That Puts The iPhone To Shame

Image
If you’ve taken a trip to your carrier’s brick and mortar store to buy a new phone in the past several years, chances are you probably haven’t come across any Sony smartphones. That’s because the company has largely been focusing its smartphone business on overseas markets like Europe and Japan. Now, it looks like that’s starting to change Sony is debuting its first major smartphone for Verizon on Oct. 23 — the Xperia Z3v. It’s a spin on its recent Xperia Z3 flagship, which just launched on T-Mobile’s network last month. It comes with a 5.2-inch 1080p screen and features a glass rear panel that makes the back of the phone feel as slick as the touch screen. It'll cost $199 on a two-year contract. It'll cost approximately $680 without a contract. It’s a nice phone, but Sony will have to offer a really compelling experience to compete with brands that are already incredibly popular in the US smartphone space, especially Apple and Samsung. Sony hopes to do that in a couple of way...
