Five persons were killed in separate incidents since Thursday morning as heavy rains continued to batter the district. People living in low lying areas heaved a sigh of relief as the floodwaters receded in most areas. Road link to Amaravathi remained cut off as floodwaters inundated several low lying causeways on the Guntur-Amaravathi Road.
Joint Collector Vivek Yadav said two persons -- Mulpuri Srinivasa Rao (35) and Velagala Seethamahalakshmi (55) -- died in separate incidents while the identity of a woman who was washed away at Lam village was yet to be established. Srinivasa Rao, who hailed from Ravela village in Tadikonda mandal, drowned in the Yarra Vagu in Kantheru village while Seethamahalakshmi died of electrocution at Atchampet.
Two persons were feared washed away in a swollen rivulet after being hit by a sports utility vehicle at Ameensahebpalem on Narsaraopet-Chilakaluripet road today. The two were identified as K. Harikrishna and Thota Venkateswarlu, working at Krishnaveni Engineering College at Kesanupalli near Narsaraopet.
The duo was heading home when they were hit by a SUV. They lost control and fell into the Kuppaganji drain which has been in spate owing to heavy rains for the last 48 hours.
Mr. Yadav directed the tehsildars to immediately send proposals for payment of ex gratia under Apadh Bandhu scheme.
He also instructed the revenue and police teams to be on high alert and put up warning boards at all low level causeways in the district. Reviewing the flood situation in Guntur, Mr. Yadav asked the Guntur Municipal Corporation to remove the silt at Saibaba temple on Etukuru Road abutting the national highway to allow free flow of water. He also directed the revenue personnel to flush out excess water at ST habitation in Prathipadu. The JC asked the revenue and police teams to evacuate people living on Ratnala Cheruvu Katta in Mangalagiri.
